Two vehicle accident with Semi Trucks on Highway 50

09/23/2020

Sheriff William C. Brueggemann advised on 09-23-2020 at 0800 hours Cass County Deputies, along with Cass County EMA, Weeping Water, Avoca and Manley Fire & Rescue responded to a non-injury accident on Hwy 50 in front of Hilltop. Investigation determined that a blue Peterbilt, driven by Larry McCullough, 59 was northbound on Hwy 50 when a second truck, a Kenworth dump truck, driven by Joseph Steckly, 31 of Guide Rock, NE pulled out of Hilltop and attempted to turn southbound on Hwy 50. Steckly did not see the northbound Peterbilt which caused McCullough to swerve and leave the roadway. McCullough's truck traveled through the ditch and came to rest next to the gas pumps at Hilltop. During the accident the load from McCullough's truck was dumped onto Hwy 50, shoulder of the roadway and through the ditch. The load was chicken guts and was deemed a biohazard and the scene was turned over to Cass County Emergency Agency.

At the time of the accident fog had reduced the visibility to appproximately 250 ft. Neither driver required medical transport.
