Cass County Sheriff Robert Sorenson advised that at approximately 1:14 am on Saturday, May 25, 2024, a Cass County Deputy was running traffic on Hwy 75 near Hwy 34 just outside Union. The deputy observed a silver Ford sedan turn onto Hwy 75 from Hwy 34 and began traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. The deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop of the vehicle, but the vehicle refused to stop and began to accelerate away from the deputy. The pursuit took a turn towards Lake Waconda on Waconda Rd. The suspect vehicle failed to navigate the turn at Waconda Rd. and 30th Ave. and wrecked into a dry creek bed.

The driver was identified as a juvenile male from Omaha. Nehawka Rescue was called, as well as Lifenet, due to the driver suffering serious injuries. The deputy on scene provided medical aid until Nehawka Rescue and County Medics arrived. The driver was flown to UNMC with serious injuries. Alcohol is suspected to have played a role in this incident.
