Sheriff Sorenson hosts Deb Fisher - 911 Services

04/02/2024

On April 2, 2024, Sheriff Robert Sorenson hosted a vital meeting focusing on our emergency response system's backbone - 911 services. Numerous individuals attended the meeting, including Senator Deb Fischer, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commissioner Brendan Carr, the Public Service Commissioner Dan Watermeier, State 911 Director Sankey the Nebraska Public Service Commissioner, Cass County Commissioners Alex Degarmo and John Winkler, several dedicated representatives from the Cass County Sheriff's Office, and numerous other important state and local officials. The meeting started with a tour of the Cass County 911 Dispatch Center, led by Dispatch Supervisor Cindy Burke, with special real-time contributions complemented by Dispatcher Kylie Ludwig, providing an inside look at the core of our emergency response operations.

Immediately afterward, a roundtable discussion was held. Public Service Commission Chair Dan Watermeier initiated the conversation, joined by US Senator Deb Fischer and FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr. Dave Sankey provided a valuable update on the deployment of NG911 in Cass County and throughout the rest of Nebraska. The discussions focused on critical issues such as federal funding for cybersecurity, proposed rule-making in NE for NG911 (New Generation) systems, and available resources for evaluating and improving emergency services communications in Cass County.

The FCC ensures that the top priority is everyone's ability to reach 911, with rules that apply to wireless carriers. Senator Fischer's new role on the US Senate Appropriations Committee and her continued leadership on infrastructure issues provide her with opportunities to directly impact emergency response systems and transportation safety in Cass County.
