Man with hammer attacks people near the Greenwood Interchange

Cass County Sheriff, Wm. C. Brueggemann advised that on Sunday, May 8th 2022 at 1:40 p.m., Cass County Sheriff's deputies along with Nebraska State Patrol were dispatched to the Cubby's gas station at the 420 Interchange of Interstate 80 for a man threatening people with a hammer and attempting to pull them from their vehicles.

It was dispatched that the man fled the area heading North on Highway 63 on foot. Both Cass County Deputies and Nebraska State Patrol searched the area where a foot pursuit occurred near the I80 Raceway. Subject entered the raceway and ran to the West grand stands where a Nebraska State Patrol Trooper was able to deploy a taser and subject was taken into custody.

Greenwood Fire and Rescue along with Cass County Medics were paged to the scene self-inflicted injuries to the man. Subject was checked out and transported to Bryan West in Lincoln for injuries. It was advised that Nebraska State Patrol was looking for the subject and the vehicle for prior calls for service when the dispatch to Cubby's came out. Subject damaged two vehicles in the area during the foot pursuit.

Investigation is ongoing and being handled by Nebraska State Patrol.
